Study abroad
The VCU School of Dentistry study abroad programs are available to fourth-year dental students who are required to meet a number of criteria including academic standing and a strong service history. Students apply for the opportunity to experience dental education through partner institutions in Brazil, China, and Slovenia.
Brazil
University of the Region of Joinville, FURJ/Univille is a pioneering institution in higher education and part of the history of one of the most prosperous regions of the south of Brazil, located south of Sao Paulo. The institution stands out for providing quality education and for excellence in technology and innovation. The School of Dentistry has a five-year B.D.S. program and enrolls approximately 40 students per year. Specialty clinics are similar to those at the VCU School of Dentistry. Dental students receive guidance in a comprehensive approach to health and have the opportunity to carry out health promotion activities in schools and communities.
China
Qingdao Stomatological Hospital was established in 1987 and is the only public, non-profit dental hospital that directly reports to the Qingdao City Health Department. The hospital hosts the Qingdao Dental Association and the Center for Clinical Study of Preventive Dentistry. It is also a teaching hospital for Weifong Dental School, Shandong University, Qingdao University, Lanzhou Medical University and Anhui Medical College.
The facility is equipped with 80 dental chairs and 42 beds for in-patient services. There are eight clinical departments in the hospital including restorative dentistry/endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pedodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics/mucosal diseases, geriatric dentistry and dental health. The Implant Center, International Clinic, and Preventive Dentistry are new additions to the hospital. The teaching hospital serves an urban population of more than 8 million through oral disease prevention and health care.
Slovenia
The University of Ljubljana is the oldest, largest, and highest internationally ranked university in Slovenia. It is among the top 1.7 % of the world's best universities. With over 63,000 enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, it is also among the largest universities in Europe. The VCU School of Dentistry student exchange program is the first exchange in dentistry at the University.
The University’s Faculty of Medicine is divided into undergraduate and postgraduate departments within the Sections of General Medicine and Dental Medicine. Both sections educate students on the undergraduate as well as post-graduate level. Lectures are organized at the Faculty of Medicine and in public health institutions with educational offerings. After graduation, candidates are awarded the title of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Dental Medicine.
